1 Nigel Wilkes – Breezer – 119.5
2 Karen Denton – Zelda – 109.75
Our first level 7 trial at Wellingborough and already the rain has stopped and the sun is on its way out. I arrived at the venue to sort out teas and coffees ready for everyone.
Judge Ali arrived and started to mark out the three search areas. As Ali has been to Wellingborough before she already had a plan for the searches.
We got underway with the first internal search and everyone was looking forward to finding lots of hides. As this level demands a lot of brain power from the competitor it was a very quiet trial.
There were only eight teams so we moved on quite quickly. I will let Ali the judge talk about the searches. I was the runner for the day but at this level all teams know what they are doing which made my job so much easier. Except when one team took themselves off for a lovely long walk around the rugby field….
The last search was in the rugby changing rooms and corridor which was a lot of fun.
Just as we were about to start the exterior search a member of the public arrived and set up a bonfire…. Luckily the wind was in our favour and the smoke did not blow across the search area.
A white dog was run in each search area.
A huge thank you to Ali Brannen for judging today and setting an excellent level 7. Also massive thank you’s to Helen Kennedy who scribed and to Justine Steele who shadow scribed. They both were so excited all day. It was a pleasure to watch them.
I really enjoyed today’s trial and enjoyed being trial manager and watching the teams doing a great job of searching.
Thank you to all the competitors – you all were lovely to watch. Although only Nigel Wilkes with Breezer (1st) and Karen Denton with Zelda (2nd plus Excellent rosette) qualified all went home happy and with the best dog.
Trial Manager
Marianne
First off I would like to thank Marianne Tembey for asking me to judge the level 7 at Wellingborough, also thanks to my scribes Helen Kennedy and Justine Steele who shared duties for the trial and were enthusiastic throughout the trial.
After the judges briefing we started with interior 1. The hide from left to right were a plug socket, between 2 benches, the tube of a fire extinguisher, the underside of a table and a gap in the skirting board, the blank hide was placed under the leg of a bench, with an edge showing. 2/8 teams found all 5, they were Nigel & Breezer who also correctly declared the area clear, and Karen & Zelda. 1/8 teams found 4 and that was Wendy & Quincy. 4/8 teams found 3 and that was Tina & Timon, Karen & Reggie, Heather & Timmy and Nikki & Ellie. 1 team found 2 and that was Susan & Lyla. The 2 hides that were most commonly missed were the bench & and the skirting board.
Then it was time for the exterior search. The hides from left to right were a gap in a fence post, the lip of a bin, a parasol base and the bottom of a door. The blank hide was placed under the leg of a picnic bench with an edge visible 3/8 teams found 3 and they were Nigel & Breezer, Nikki & Ellie & Karen & Zelda. 3/8 found 2 hides and they were Wendy & Quincy, Karen & Reggie and Tina & Timon. 2/8 found 1 hide & they were Susan & Lyla and Heather & Timmy. The hide missed by everybody was the fence post at the beginning of the search area.
Lastly it was interior 2, this was held in a corridor & changing rooms. The hides were a vent in the corridor wall, under the corner of a fridge on a bench and a space between 2 benches. The blank hide was placed in the crack of a door with an edge showing. 4/8 teams found all 3 and they were Karen & Zelda, Karen & Reggie, Nigel & Breezer and Nikki & Ellie. 3/8 teams found 2 hides and they were Tina & Timon, Susan & Lyla & Wendy & Quincy who pulled out before Quincy found the last hide. 1/8 teams found just 1 and that was Heather & Timmy. The most missed hide was the bottom of the fridge.
We had 2 qualifiers overall in first place was Nigel & Breezer and in second place was Karen & Zelda who also gained her excellent award in Level 7, well done guys. Also well done to everyone who took part in the trial, you all worked incredibly hard throughout the day and it was a pleasure to watch you work.
All hides were surface hides as per Scentwork UK guidelines & a white dog was ran over each area.
