Another Monday morning time for another Scentwork UK trial. As we only had level 6 today it was very relaxed. We were due to start at 10am and when I walked my dogs first thing it was raining, but when I arrived at the trial it had stopped raining but was very cold. The rain was forecast but we were very lucky that it bypassed Wellingborough Rugby Club.

All competitors arrived in time for the judges breifing. As it was level 6 everyone was shown where the areas to be searched were and had a good look round.

The rugby club is great for the higher levels as it has lots of different rooms and many exterior areas to choose from.

Karen Denton was the judge today and as always was very professional, put everyone at ease and did a superb job all day. Helen Kennedy was the scribe and is a great help to the judge. Helen is an excellent scribe and is always willing to help.

Chris Baldwin was the runner today and kept everyone sorted and in order and ensured that the judge was not kept waiting. Plus always brings CAKE!!!

As it was Nov 11th we all had a moments silence at 11am.

A white dog was used in all the searches.

We also had the pleasure of a guest puppy. A little Tibetan Terrier and as I was the trial manager I had to have cuddles and supervise whilst Sara was in the search areas. Little Billie had a great day and I quess was very tired last night. A new scentwork dog in the making.

Thank you so much to Karen Denton for judging, Helen Kennedy for scribing and Chris Baldwin for running. Also thank you to all the competitors who make the day worthwhile.

It was a cold day with the promise of rain so I decided to run the exterior search while there was still some blue in the sky. Marianne’s venue offers amazing searching possibilities and I set the hides in the open but covered mini grandstand just in case the heavens opened. There were four hides in each area and I chose to double up each of the odours in each of the three areas so in the grandstand there were two cloves, one gun oil and one truffle oil. Most dogs did exceptionally well here with Emma’s Cora being awesome and systematically searching and completing in 81 seconds. Suzanne’s Duke, Jo’s Ehren and Wendy’s Quincy also put in a great shift.

We then went inside and the first interior search was in the main hall of which I’d allocated half to be searched. None of the dogs found all four in this section which had two gun oil swatches, one truffle and one clove and all handlers worked to time. Sara’s excellent handling in this area ensured that Tia was the only dog to find the swatch in the wall panel.

The second interior search was in the corridor and three changing rooms. This area had two truffle, one gun oil and one clove. Most of the dogs did really well here although some of the handlers lost touch with which rooms they’d been in as they all looked exactly the same! Emma & Cora and Jo & Ehren conducted themselves with gusto and found all four hides in 98 and 100 seconds.

Of course it’s not all about speed and overall the standard was high with none of the handlers appearing nervous and, as such, were able to concentrate on observing and reading their dogs which many did with great skill. Congratulations to all the competitors, it was fabulous seeing those who I’ve judged before in lower levels now being up at this level and also lovely to meet new folk for the first time at Level 6.

Thank you Marianne for inviting me to judge another well organised trial and also thanks to Helen for doing a great job scribing.

I hope everyone enjoyed the experience and that those who didn’t qualify on this occasion were able to take away some positives. Keep searching!
