We had a brilliant day at Aldingbourne for our level 2 and 3 trial. The sun was shining and although it was a little chilly to start it soon warmed up. Sadly our second judge had to withdraw last minute so I ended up judging which is a bizarre feeling when you are used to organising your own trial. Luckily I had an absolutely amazing team of helpers who kept the whole day running so brilliantly. Thanks to Sarah, Lorraine, Jamie, Becky and Julie. I really couldn’t have done it without you! Clean sweep of qualifications in both levels, you really couldn’t ask for more!
Firstly want to start by saying congratulations to all our competitors, every single one of you qualified today which is simply amazing. The standard was very high!
We started with the level 3’s in the morning. I was doing the external searches and we started with the vehicles. I’d set an interesting test for them with one set fairly open and able to disperse and the other one more contained. The wind was blowing a little which caught a few handlers out initially but all teams found at least one. Kim and Remy were on point and very quickly found both scents. Onto the exterior, there was some lovely work here, it was a pleasure to watch them really understand the job at hand and get on with it. Jan and Amber really stood out here as Jan really understood how to get the best out of Amber it was brilliant to watch.
1st – Kim and Remy – Rem is a fab shepherd who really understands her job and loves to please. A well deserved win after an almost flawless performance.
2nd – Catherine and Cael – Catherine does a great job at understanding Cael and what he needs to get the best out of him. He started the day a little stressed but with some patience, kind words and some treats he was on flying form by the end.
3rd – Becky and Reba – Reba clearly understands her job and this team are going from strength to strength.
4th – Grahame and Skeena – another fabulous shepherd. I just loved Grahame’s kind and patient handling of Skeena. A really lovely team that will go far.
On to level 2 and I opted to stay outside in the sunshine. We started with the exterior and it was an pleasure to watch all the teams understand the task at hand. A couple of handlers missed or didn’t trust and early alert (mean judge put it on one of the first items) John and Storm confidently and correctly called the first alert in under 5s so well done to them. After a quick lunch we moved onto our final area of the day the vehicles. Some interesting handling techniques in this one with Bella taking Diana straight from scent to scent despite there being a car in between! I really enjoyed watching their head’s flick back as they went past a scent I had put between 2 doors. Showing once again they really understand the scent game well!
1st – Tina and George – I’m absolutely thrilled for this team they had a tricky start to the Scentwork game but with a lot of hard work and dedication from Tina they have gone from struggling at level 1 to clean sweeps in both level 2’s and coming away with a 2nd last time out and a 1st today. Bring on level 3!
2nd – Charles and Skye – I had the pleasure of judging Charles and Skye a few weeks ago in that time Charles has worked exceptionally hard. Today was by far the calmest I’ve seen Skye work at anything in the 4 years I’ve known her. This change has really paid off in the searching. Well deserved 2nd place and Excellent title to boot.
3rd – Lindsey and Chip – what a lovely lurcher! He really knows his job and Lindsey know how to get the best out of him. I love that Lindsey asked great questions and was keen to learn. A team that will go far.
4th – Geoff and Jazz – in the past Geoff has struggle to read Jazz and that has led to some miscommunication and false alerts. Geoff has worked hard to correct this and it really paid off today. Beautiful alerts and well read equalling some brilliant handling. Well done team
Clean sweep – Sian and Ossie – Sian handles Ossie so well, he’s an entire male with a tendency for scent marking. Sian kept Ossie focused on the task and that reflected well in his marks.
Clean Sweep – Colin and Mork – their first time at level 2 and they did an incredible job. Really nice searching from Mork and Colin read him well when he became distracted at points.
I hope you enjoyed the day and looking forward to seeing you back again in the future.
