Thank you to Rick Burgess and Kate Kemp for inviting me to judge their L1 trial at The Scent Barn. Thank you also to my scrime Sue Dawe who, as always, did a fantastic job.
What a wonderful, diverse range of breeds we had attend, from a Swedish Vallhund to Hungarian Vizslas; from a Dalmatian to spaniels; from a standard poodle to GSDs, to name just a few of the breeds represented within the 25 dogs that participated.
We started with Tables and chairs. A couple of teams really stood out. Michelle Hortons collie Fly worked well and left Michelle in absolutely no doubt as to where the scent was hidden with an enthusiastic solid indication. Laura Mordecai with her Hungarian Vizsla Sol worked the tables and chairs beautifully, Sol showed great focus and attention to the job in hand and ended his search with a very sound indication.
On to the vehicle search which some found challenging due to the environment at the Scent Barn and nerves. However, Linda Bowden with both her GSDs Brewster and Elsa gave a fantastic demonstration of how to work a vehicle. Brewster in particular was exceptional, picking up the scent in the air at the ‘starting gate’ and working it to source in 10 seconds.
Back inside we went for the boxes and luggage search. Nerves were still evident with 4 false alerts being called. Hilary Ritchie and her spaniel Ruby nailed the search in 12 seconds. If it wasn’t for Hilary questioning Ruby’s indication in the last search she would have been in the placings. Ruby has a great work ethic and is happy in her work. She wouldn’t have been out of place amongst those placed at today’s trial.
Our last search, the exterior, saw those who knew they had passed relax and as such many teams had their best search of the day. Most notable were Philippa Joyce and Ralph who really stood out as having their best search.
Placings were decided on time, with only 2 seconds separating 1st and 2nd. Janet Wood and her spaniel Purdy were worthy winners. Purdy was a pleasure to watch, as was Janet’s other dog Kite, a collie, who took 4th. 2nd place went to Linda Bowden and Brewster who were a formidable team, see my vehicle search comments!
3rd place went to Elizabeth Axford and Tonica, a NSDTR, a great team. Elizabeth beat her husband Stephen with his NSDTR by 7 seconds. It was so close at the top of the leader board that those 7 seconds left Stephen in 5th just outside the placings.
The other team I’d like to mention is Jo Thiselton -Dyer and Finn, a cross breed. Finn worked well in every search, he was methodical and honest in his approach. Only time stopped this pair being placed.
We had a fantastic Level 1 at the Scent Barn today.
Huge congratulations to all who entered.
Thank you to our judge Lindsay Thomason our super scrime Susan Dawe
All the competitors who made the day easy to run and created a wonderful atmosphere.
Well done & thank you everyone!
