Trial Mangers Report – Annette Leslie
Islip Trial, Northants 3rd November 2018
Level One and Two
This was my first opportunity to host a trial and I was very happy to receive a full entry – thank you competitors.
Thank you to my judges Tracey Alker and Jennie Fairweather who between them judged both levels, enabling us to move along quite quickly. As I don’t run a scent club I had put a call out for volunteer helpers and I was thrilled to receive such a good response – Superstars for the day were Janet Wykes, Christine Gregory, Chris Baldwin, Chris Bennett, Jean Tomkinson, Emma Marie and Nicola Inglis – without you this trial would not have been possible and I am incredibly grateful for your knowledge, help and good humour.
With the village hall being central to the residents, there is housing around and I thought I had been very clear in my briefing email about how considerate we needed to be to the locals. Sadly one competitor’s dogs continually barking has put the future hire of the venue at risk, potentially wrecking my HTM training business built up over 5 years – so please in future take great care and be respectful of the locals.
Keep sniffing
Tracy Alker
I arrived in Islip and was greeted by Annette’s smiling face in the car
park, directing me where to park. Everything was planned and prepared so
Jennie and I just had to set up the searches ready to begin. We knew we
were in for a busy day due to the number of entrants, so best to keep things
moving as quickly as possible. Level 1 was first and I was outside doing the
vehicle search so I quickly put my white dog Billy to work. Great indication so
he went inside to Annette’s office and we began.
We were off to a great start as most teams found the scent quickly and
gained 20 points. During this time the Chairs & Tables searches were inside
so we had a quick change over and set up the exterior search and the boxes
and luggage. The boxes once again proved the toughest challenge of the day
with 3 teams missing the find. Piglet, the little blind dog, had decided she
wanted to make a bed on the black case and settled down looking cosy on the
top! Sadly, this wasn’t the scented item. Meadow did a fantastic job with Mr
Wilson when he was distracted by rattling mugs in the kitchen. She promptly
put him back on to searching where he had come off and confidently called
the correct item when he indicated, her Mum saying she thought it was
somewhere else. No mean feat for a 6 year old so congratulations Meadow –
brilliant! We all gathered for the results in the main hall as Annette added up
the totals and prepared the certificates and rosettes for prize giving including
an Excellent rosette for Gabrielle & Elli. Well done!
It was a lovely morning with some really nice searches and a good
variety of dog breeds. Time was on our side as we finished early and had time
for a bite to eat before our Level 2 teams arrived. Once again, Annette had
thought of everything and brought along lunch for the judges!
We were lucky the weather stayed dry but it did turn chilly in the
afternoon. I was fortunate to start outside first with the exterior search. We
had a few reactive dogs take part in L2 but with help from Annette, the
runners and consideration from all competitors, they were able to attend and
search in a relaxed manner. Soul did a lovely indication to his handler
Christine and Collie Max was just so calm. He did a lovely off lead search and
went home at the end of the day with his Excellent Rosette – very well done
Max & Lynda.
All change again as the next 2 searches were set up and I welcomed
being indoors in the warm for boxes & luggage. Once again, this search
contained the most false alerts of the afternoon. We had some nice
indications from Ruff (find odour then look straight at handler) and Brewster
was convinced by his box as he pushed the box all the way to the door until
he could go no further! So we had finished inside, oblivious to the fact that it
was starting to get dark outside but all well aware of the date being 2 days
before Guy Fawkes night!
Once again, time to add up the scores and give out the certificates and
rosettes. Thank you everybody for coming to the trial, especially those who
travelled many miles. We hope you enjoyed your day even though it can
make the nerves appear. Many thanks to my scribes Janet & Chris and to
Annette and all other helpers. Trials cannot run without you.
