On Sunday I ran a Level 1, 3 and 4 trial at Daglingworth village Hall and arrived early to set things up before the competitors came, which they started to at just before 9 am which allowed them some time to look at the surroundings and also walk their dogs before the Trial started
Just after 9.15 my helpers arrived and Artaine and Stephanie helped me get the rooms ready as well as greeting the teams as they arrived, My Judge for the day was Karen Denton who travelled down from Stourbridge area.
We started off with our Level 1 trial at 10 am, with Table and Chairs and we had 13 entries with 3 running 2 dogs. Also in this group I had a few of those who attend my training sessions and one who had only done two lessons so I didn’t watch then just in case I put more pressure on them!
We followed on with the Vehicle Search, Boxes and Luggage and finally the Exterior Search. From what I saw everyone had upped their game and the dogs were working well. A few did have some problems finding the scent but I was pleased as everyone had qualified and especially Paula Davis with Jazz who came second as unfortunately 2weeks before she lost her lovely faithfully GSD Dylan who also was entered for this trial!
Unfortunately we were running a little late for the start of the Level 3 and 4 Trial and started at 2 pm and this time we did the Boxes and Luggage followed by Table and chairs with Vehicle search and Exterior search.
The teams where really going well and it felt like we were going to get back on track with the time. Our Judge was joined by Berit who scribed for this are Stephanie was the runner and aging this worked well with getting everybody ready and there was little waiting around.
I have to mention Heather and Timmy who unfortunately failed on the Friday Trial that I judged, but she and Timmy again came to try again and little Timmy with Heather managed to pass as did all the other entries with Ian Arrowsmith winning Level 3 and Jennifer and Sullivan winning level 3. Together with Geof and Bug who gained their Excellent Award.
After a long day we finally finished and I would like to thank Artaine, Stephanie and Berit, but a special thanks to Karen for being such a superb judge and making it an enjoyable day. Also there was a profit of £235.00 which will be going to our Charity GSD Rescue Cyprus.
Nigel Wilkes
Trial Manager
I had a lovely day today judging Nigel’s Trial. I saw many familiar smiling faces and many new smiling faces. I had 23 teams working with 13 doing L1, 6 doing L3 and 4 doing L4.
The Level 1s competed in the morning which was quite chilly in the hall and outside but good for the dogs. I’m delighted to say that the standard was high and everyone passed. There were some folk doing L1 for the first time, some doing it again with a different dog, some having another shot because they missed it in an earlier Trial and others going for their Excellence Award. In all, a lovely mixture of dogs and reasons for being there. Linda Bowden took first place with Brewster and her other GSD, Elsa, got a clean sweep. I was very impressed with these dogs, particularly in the car search where they were focused and driven (no pun intended!) to find the scent, searching all the seams and wheels spokes of the car with intent. They reminded me Border Patrol dogs!
There were some amazingly quick finds in this L1 group with many searches completed in less than 20 seconds. Notables amongst the many were Qeeva, Jazz, Chester, Maki and Baileyboo.
The sun came out in the afternoon and it got hotter as the day wore on. I ran L3 and L4 alongside each other as there was only 6 handler/dog teams in L3 and 4 in L4. This was a group of very good dogs and Ian and Jasper came in first in L3 and Kathy’s dog, Star, lived up to her name and took the red rosette in L4. Jasper likes to make himself heard as he rushes around during the searches while Star does it quietly and methodically. Sullivan was a fast dog whizzing around the cars on a mission with Jennifer in hot pursuit – literally as the sun was beating down and Roxanne, with Arlee, worked hard to read him and came in at a close second place in L3.
In Level 4 Tables & Chairs the distraction scent was a sponge pan scrubber covered in horse hair concealed in an open tool box. Amongst the Boxes and Luggage was a dog toy in the pocket of a case and outside the distraction was a cat carrier with a blanket inside it. Most dogs coped admirably with this and only one dog found it more interesting than the proper find. In the Table & Chairs/Perimeter search both the finds were on the perimeter as well as the distraction. One scent was taped behind the radiator and two dogs got their 10 points under the ‘6 inch grace rule’ and were lucky as they both indicated at the bottom of the radiator exactly 6 inches away.
In L3 Gem did a proper Border Patrol type search on the cars which was fabulous to watch. Geoff’s Bug was either totally focused or totally not but did his owner proud overall and won him an Excellence Award today and as everyone in L3and L4 qualified a good day was had by all.
I’d like to thank Nigel for inviting me to judge today and also Steph and Artaine who were scribe and runner in the morning and Berit who scribed and Christine who stayed behind from the morning session to help me in the afternoon. The sun shone on us all and everyone went home still smiling.
