It was a bright start to the Level 2 and Level 6 Trial at Daglingworth. I arrived and started to get the areas set up for starting at 9.30 am. The Judges for the Level 2 trial were Tina Schuster and Sue Benson with the scribes being Paula Davis and Karen Dunkason who kindly offered to help out!

After a briefing the Level 2 trial started on Time with Tina judging the Exterior and Vehicle searches and Sue judging the Boxes and Luggage as well as the Table and Chairs. I was busy getting the teams ready so that we didn’t waste any time.

As it was Remembrance Sunday we agreed that the trial should be suspended just before 11 to allow a minutes silence.

The trial ended earlier than expected with Lorraine Coley and Chester being deserved winners and also they had their ‘Excellent’ award. Also all 9 competitors who entered the Trial succeeded in getting the pass mark. So congratulations to everyone for doing so well.

Finishing early meant that we could at least have a sit down lunch and enabled Tina and I to walk our dogs before the afternoon session started.
Level 6 again started on time with the first search indoors. This proved very difficult and most competitors where only finding 1 or 2 however, at least all 4 of the scents were found by one dog or another.

The next search was outside and to my relief the teams were coming back after finding 4 or 5 of the articles. Coming into the last search there were at least 5 teams who could have qualified. With only 3 articles to find I was nervous as the teams went out for their search.

The trial finished with a deserved winning team of Becky Harris and Flossie.
I would like to thank Sue and Tina or judging for me as well as Paula, Karen and Steph who scribed in the afternoon for all their time an help in making this an enjoyable trial to manage.

Judge’s comments – Sue Benson

I was very pleased to be asked by Nigel to judge level 2 and level 6 at Daglingworth. We were very fortunate to have a bright, clear day.

Tina very kindly helped judge level 2 alongside me so that we could keep things moving smoothly.

I judged tables and chairs and perimeter first. Following with boxes and luggage. There was some lovely teamwork and it was a pleasure to see how differently they worked together. There weren’t too many problems although nerves got the better at times. I was very impressed with the handling especially Shaun and Cassie, Deborah and Jasper and Lorraine and Chester.
Who went onto win and get their Excellent award.

Well done to you all and Congratulations as everyone passed their Level 2.

Then onto Level 6, which didn’t run as smoothly.

The first Interior search caused problems although every scent was found by different dogs.

The outside search was next and this ran very well, with most teams finding more scents,

The final search, another interior search again seemed to cause some problems. With the one by the door and another in a socket throwing several teams.

So at the end there were 3 teams that passed.

Becky and Flossie were first and achieved their Level 6 Excellence too.
Julia and Jade were second. I train with this team and their handling in this trial was very good.
Christine and Dilly were third,

It was a pleasure to judge you all and I am sure after watching the teams and the handlers you will all go on to achieve your level 6 in the very near future.

Judge’s Comments – Tina Schuster

I volunteered to help Sue Benson out judging the 9 Level 2 competitors at Daglingworth on 11 November, as she had agreed to be there the whole day for us, judging L2 (in the morning) and our first L6 in the afternoon.

It was great weather for a November day and I judged the 2 outside searches again. We started with the exterior items – on the dreaded gravel in front of the village hall. Despite the difficult surface, all competitor found the 2 scented articles and also coped with horses passing by very well (Lorraine and Chester, who ended up winning the trial). We then moved on to the cars, and it was great to see so many competitors motivating their dogs through the search – especially with the verge and other “doggy smell” distractions. Some competitors were unfortunate to miscall the scent hidden in the car door, with their dogs investigating the area and not going “to source”. It was great to see everyone pass and am looking forward to seeing some of you at our next L3 trial! Thank you Karen Dunkason for agreeing to be my scribe last minute. You were a lifesaver and great company!
