Our third trial at this new venue in Thurleigh and once again not very good weather. Just very cold…

Judges Harold Latusek and Karen Denton arrived and I introduced them to all of the competitors.

We had the judges briefing, ran the white dog and then the searching began.

Geof was doing the running in the morning but and he did a great job of ensuring all competitors arrived at their search area in time so that the judges were not kept waiting. This does add a lot of time to the day if the judges have to wait around. They work very hard as it is.

All ran very smoothly, considering the cold!!!

Harold started with the tables and chairs and then moved outside for the vehicle search. This gave Karen and her scribe – Helen Kennedy – time to get inside and warm up as they had been running the exterior search.

Once all searches were complete everyone came into the hall for the results and a warm up.

Most people qualified – and it was really lovely to see some new faces.

Huge thank you to Karen Denton for judging all day. Plus a huge thank you to Harold Latusek who judged in the morning and Linda who scribed for him. Also massive thank-you’s to Helen Kennedy for scribing in the morning and shadow scribing for level 5 in the afternoon. Plus thank you to Geof Dixon for running and always being organised.

Hopefully I have thanked all my helpers – we really cannot put these trials on without you so your help is so very much appreciated.

We were all done by 12:30am for the level 1 section and then time for results and photos.

Level 5 started after lunch and was lovely to watch. We started with the exterior search and most dogs found all five hidden scents. Karen will talk about these in her judges report.

Great result. Until next time – thank you all so much – for helping, competing and always being such lovely people.

Marianne

Karen Denton

I hadn’t been to Marianne’s venue at Thurleigh before so it’s always interesting to see a new place and to figure out the different search possibilities for the L5 Trial.

It’s a lovely venue for all levels and I was judging the L1 Trial in the morning alongside Harry Latusek who’s always good fun.

There were 15 dog/handler teams in Level 1 and I judged the Exterior first followed by the Bags and Boxes search. The standard was very high with most teams having taken this level before. Nicki, Marianne’s daughter, who usually helps out at Trials in many different capacities, participated in her first Trial with Merri and enjoyed the event from a competitor’s viewpoint on this occasion. All the dogs impressively sniffed out the scent in the Exterior search and many in very quick times. I must mention Chris, whose Jack Russell, Piglet is blind and it was very heartwarming to see the little dog working her way around the items to detect the hidden scent. How wonderfully inclusive this sport is. The Bags and Boxes proved more difficult for some partnerships for various reasons which included handlers forgetting where their dog had searched, standing in front of the bag with the scent in or calling too early and not giving the dog the chance to check everything. Congratulations to Helen & Toby who took 1st place, closely followed in 2nd by Keith & Lexi, 3rd by Kate & Kipling and 4th by Emma & Danny but congratulations to everyone else who took part. The high scores showed the standard at this Trial.

Many thanks to Sue and Geof Abbot-Dixon who provided delicious sandwiches for lunch.

There were 11 runners for Level 5 and I decided to run the Exterior search first before it got too chilly as the afternoon wore on so folk could spend the later afternoon in the warmth of the hall. Again the standard of the dogs and handlers was very high and it was a pleasure to watch everyone work I hid five scents around the front and side of the hall and most covered the area beautifully in this search especially the two Helens with Trek and Nellie doing it in super speedy times.

The Interior search 1 was next and I used most of the hall for this search. There were four scents to be found and this proved more difficult for some dogs. However, Julie & Betty, Sue & Tilly, Janet & Jess and Jamie & Bear put in a superb performance and found all four.

Interior search 2 was the hall and corridor area. There were 3 scents to be found, one behind a vent, one just above a door hinge and one under the door mat at the entrance. Only Janet & Jess and Helen & Nellie found all three so well done girls! These teams took 1st and 2nd place with Jamie & Bear coming in 3rd and Sue & Tilly 4th. Congratulations to all and well done to all who participated.

I really enjoyed my day at Thurleigh amongst such lovely competitors and I look forward to your company again soon.

Many thanks to Marianne for another great Trial and to Helen Kennedy who scribed for me and did a great job.

See you soon.

Harold Latusek

Let me start by thanking Marianne for putting on another well run trial. My fellow judge on the day,was Karen Denton, whom it’s always a pleasure to see,and also Thank you to my Scribe, Linda. I had competed at this venue in the past, however, this was my first judging appointment there.

I commenced with the tables and chairs search,Good all round searching by all of the dogs, with only 2 of the 15 teams failing to identify the scented chair.Well done to Helen and Toby, finding the scent in 14 seconds, closely followed by Keith and Monty and Gloria and Jade, with 20 and 21 seconds, respectively. I then moved on to to the vehicle search, with the scent being hidden centrally, behind the front number plate.Watching the experienced white dog first pick up the scent,on the front corner of the vehicle, owing to wind direction. I then decided to reposition the vehicle,so that the wind was blowing from the rear and not side on,as it was initially. Perhaps,I was a little generous,as all 15 dogs were successful in going to source. There were some really quick finds, with Penny and Chance coming in on 11 seconds. The standard of handling was excellent overall, with only a couple of teams losing a fraction of their handling marks.

Little Piglet never fails to amaze me,being blind didn’t stop, him going to source on both the vehicle and tables and chairs search. Four teams finished on maximum points, time factor being brought in to establish positions.1st place going to Helen and Toby, followed by Keith and Lexi, Kate and Kipling and Emma and Danny.6 other teams achieved clean sweeps. Only 0.8 separating 1st to 10th place.

We were also honoured by 2 teams gaining their level 1 excellence awards..Keith and Monty and Sonia and Ruby. Well done to everyone who braved the cold weather,I look forward to seeing some of you,if not all in the future.
