Thank you to Felicity Ashcroft for asking me to judge. It was threatening rain and quite cold, but the competitors had a nice warm room to wait in. It was my first judging appointment for Scentwork UK.

We sorted out which searches were going to be judged first, I decided to do both the outside searches first, because of the weather, and was so glad I did as it tried to rain on the last competitor. Thank you to my scribe Felicity and to my runner Jill who kept a steady flow into the searches.

My judging started with the vehicle search. Unfortunately, a couple of false alerts were given because the dogs were not given time to find the source of the scent, competitors were rushing to indicate they had found it. Sarah Melling with Ash found it in 8 seconds – well done this team for going on to win.

Having completed the vehicle search I went on to the exterior search. It was held on the patio looking over the football pitch and have to say some dogs just had to look out to check there first. Even my own dog when I asked him to white dog for me. Again, there was a couple of false alerts even one competitor who indicated the wrong article which wasn’t one of the three indicated as possibilities, I’m sure she won’t do that again! Ash found it in record time of 6 seconds, Lynette and Jazz in 12 seconds.

Next, I went on to the tables and chairs, Ash again did the search the fastest, I never imagined anybody flying around the tables and chairs as fast but could not fault the search. Again, there seemed to be distractions around the room which some dogs just had to investigate.

Lastly, I did the boxes & bags, which we did seem to spend the most time setting up and then dogs were spending most time finding, but some good handling meant some good finds, I would have called a few times when competitors didn’t and went on to find the right article, a special mention should go to Cath & Dana for this one.

An overall good handling should go to Dee Stretford with Wilma & Frank coming 2nd and 3rd – well done.

Congratulations to all the competitors who all qualified. Well done!
