This was my first Trial at Rubery and I was very pleased with the venue. It was bright and cheery and offered excellent facilities for waiting and interesting search areas. We were expecting the first fine day for a fortnight fine but the weather forecasters got it wrong and we had a deluge of rain in the morning and swirling wind in the afternoon.

My judges, Liz and Annette, arrived with big smiley faces and quickly and efficiently organised which searches they’d be covering and then set up the hides. A white dog was run before every search.

The Level 3 searches got under way and ran smoothly. I’ll let the judges comment on individual performances but just to say most teams qualified with 1st place being taken by Rachael & Logan 2nd was Gill & Sybil, 3rd Chris & Santi and 4th Marie & Liberty. Congratulations to them and to all the other qualifiers.

Level 4 got underway fairly promptly but by then the wind had also got up! The outside searches were difficult in the conditions and many struggled. The Vehicles hides were in exactly the same place as the L3 in the morning and although they’d been refreshed, the L4 teams didn’t perform as well as the L3 folk due to the wind strength. The Tables & Chairs search inside also proved quite a challenge as Liz had put both finds on the same side of the perimeter and both distractions on the chairs. This challenged quite a lot of teams and a few handlers were insisting their dogs keep searching chairs even when their dogs kept telling them it wasn’t there!

By the end only three had qualified and they were Justine & Chumley 1st, Carole & Teddy 2nd and Lynda & Max 3rd. Really well done to these teams and a special congratulations to Lynda & Max who also attained an Excellent title.

Massive thanks indeed to my fabulous judges Annette Leslie and Liz Ormerod who set interesting and challenging searches and gave invaluable advice in feedback. Also many thanks to Michelle and Lisa who scribed and Gabrielle who did the runner’s job in the morning even though she didn’t know she was going to do it till she arrived!

I hope you all enjoyed the Trial and even if you didn’t qualify, I hope you gained experience and knowledge which you can implement at your next trial.
Thank you for coming and I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
