Another great Scentwork UK trial held at Brogborough. The weather was kind to us for a change as this year we have suffered snow, wind, rain and very little sunshine.
Everyone keeps coming through the bad weather so I was very pleased to be able to watch dogs and handlers having fun whilst not being frozen solid.
It is so lovely being a trial manager as I am able to watch so many different dogs searching. Also to watch so many teams really progressing.
A huge thank you to ur judge Liz Ormerod who did a fabulous job all day. Also thanks must go to Nicki who is always in the background running around after everyone. Ensuring that people know their running order and are ready to enter on time. The endless drinks that she serves to everyone.
A very big thank you also to Denise Engel who has only just started scentwork classes and offered to help today. She worked very hard but also had fun and learnt a lot about what actually happens during a trial.
The biggest thank you’s must go to you the competitor who allow us to watch your dogs all day.
I look forward to seeing you all again next trial.
Marianne
Thank you to Marianne for inviting me to judge at this Brogborough trial. The weather remained kind to us (unusual for Brogborough!) and all ran very smoothly due to the fantastic organisation as per Marianne’s’ fair hands!
Level 3 (9 teams)
Boxes and Luggage – not the usual starting search and the red/flat bag did prove a bit challenging for a few teams. The dogs and handlers seemed to miss it or go right over it without investigating, a learning curve for some.
Exterior Search – A much needed boost for the teams as all but one found all two finds. Some lovely teamwork demonstrated especially with the challenging ground of the grass and sticks falling from the tree. Dexter’s passive indication is joyful to watch.
Tables & Chairs / Perimeter – Another successful search for most of the teams. Kathy with Star are so graceful to watch whereas Gem whizzes around getting on with the job set to her. Different styles, both successes.
Vehicle Search – Had to watch where the finds were hidden on this one as the sun had been blazing down on the cars and were proving a bit hot to touch. A few teams needed at least one of the finds for a qualification so many times our breaths were held, but all good results and smiles.
Results- Congratulations to Hazel and Gem who was awarded first place for a very sound performance.
Level 2 (12 teams)
Vehicle Search – started this one as we had finished with this one from the Level 3’s. If its not raining and cold at Brogborough, its bright hot sun. The finds had been refreshed but some dogs not so on form with this today.
Tables & Chairs / Perimeter – Nearly all under 2-minute finds with Julie & Betty romping round to find both in 29 secs!
Exterior Search – only 50% were successful in finding two finds. Unfortunately, we had a “wee” incident followed by another, which can create a bit of anxiety in the handlers trying to avoid “the area”, but most handled it well. Always a challenge.
Boxes and Luggage – Our final search of the day but ended with some good highs! Actually a more successful result compared to the exterior search and lovely to see Suzanne & Duke end on a high with both finds.
Results – Congratulations to Jan & Amber for their well deserved first place and to all the other competitors who qualified. To those that didn’t quite make it – keep enjoying what you’re doing, here’s to your next trial.
After 84 searches to watch and judge, it was a long day but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Big thanks to my scribe Denise Engel as it was her first go at scribing and she seemed to enjoy it. Thanks again to Nicki who is such a great support team member, always at hand to sort things.
