Trial Manager and Judges Reports

Heather Donnelly

The weather at the Finmere L3 & 5 trial turned out to be a rather windy event yet again. Looking at a recent forecast I was heartened that the wet start would finish around 10am to then be followed by a clear sky and the wind decreasing. Rather annoying , what wasn’t forecasted was a torrential shower that descended upon us around 11am, making the already rather difficult vehicle search virtually impossible to do. Although I appreciate that those unlucky competitors didn’t enjoy the soaking, I think everyone should be grateful to both the judge and scribe who had to stay out in it. So a big thank you to Julia Edwards (Judge) and Yaz Whitehall (Scribe) for doing judging and scribing in the most appalling conditions.
With both judges working through the competitors at a good pace we did manage to finish all the L3’s at around 1pm just before the L5’s competitors arrived. Susan Benson our L5 judge, who also judged the L3, got to work straight away setting up the first search ready for the L5 to walk. All three searches Susan devised were spot on for a L5 with most of the hides being fairly easy to find with just the occasional ‘hide’ a little bit testing. By the end of the day we had 6 qualifiers out of the 10 runners and the dogs that were on the money today really deserved their places. Also a mention to Melanie Goble who helped all day, as did Yaz with scribing and scoreboard duties I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your help both of you.

Sue Benson 23 February Level 3

It was a pleasure to judge level 3 alongside Julia Edwards, who did amazingly well for her first time.

So many lovely and talented teams all working well together.
I started with tables and chairs and perimeter. One chair caused a few problems with the dogs coming round the corner of the tables and completely missing the chair. Always remember to check every item.
Then I judged outside search, it was like a hurricane and very challenging. Delighted to say everyone passed. Julie Neal was a very worthy winner but the standard of these teams was very high. Well done to everyone.
I then judged level 5. There were some awesome dogs, allison and Dylan, an incredible team fully deserved to win. The standard of the teams was very high . We had a lovely day, brilliant work, lots of laughs and new friends made.
Thankyou to the scribes, Jaz and Melanie, who were so efficient, and whom we couldn’t manage without. Thankyou to Heather for asking me to judge, it was a pleasure and a privilege.

A very enjoyable day watching the level 3 dogs work despite the weather conditions that made it difficult on the outside searches. Great to see such enthusiastic dogs and handlers and to watch them work so well. Everybody passed and I particularly loved watching the speedy spaniels work so willingly.
Thank you to both the scribes especially Yazz who probably needs a holiday in the sun as she was out in the elements all day. it was also great to see how good the teamwork was and how well people read their dogs.
Coming from a working trials background remember on exterior searches in blustery conditions to take your dogs round both ways as they can miss it the first time . Loved seeing free searches inside off the lead and the dogs all well seemed to enjoy the freedom and succeeded
Everyone should feel very proud so congratulations and look forward to seeing you in level 4, 5 . 6 , 7 and 8
Hope you all enjoyed the day
