Well this was the first time that I changed the format by inviting two judges to share the judging of two different Levels.
Jo Hill judged the Level 2 & 3 ‘Table & chairs’ & ‘Boxes and Luggage’ searches whilst Marianne Tembey judged the ‘Exterior Search’ & ‘Vehicle Searches’, the same levels, at the same time but in a different order. It seemed to work well and I think part of this success was due to Dana Brewis managing the competitor flow and Sally Ewers-Marshal collating the scores from our most efficient scribes, Susan Benson and Lynn Bell, both who had travelling from quite afar to help on the day; so a big thank you to these four.
My only concerns on the day was that rather heavy showers that were expected around lunch time and the footballs decided to organise an unannounced BBQ. I needn’t have worried though as Liz Ormerod and Linda Johnson kindly offered us the use of their gazebos and Ali Brannen amongst her other duties, including working two dogs in L6, became car park attendant and let the footballers know when they had parked inappropriately.
Jo arrived bright and early but just beating our first competitor arriving coming all the way from Wales. My husband helped with carpark duties which enabled me to concentrate on setting up the search areas with the help of Marianne and Pippa Bentham.
So the ‘Exterior’ and ‘Table & Chairs’ searches duly got under way with Jo finishing both L2 & 3’s by 10.10am. So as to keep the flow Jo was quite happy to start straight with the ‘boxes & luggage’ search and finished both searches by 12am. Marianne also didn’t hang around and soon caught up allowing scores to be added up, certificates to be signed and the presentation all done before 1pm.
So everyone had an hour to spare before the L6 competitors arrived and Tracey Alker also turning up in excellent time enabling everyone to get familiar with the L6 scoring, setting up the first L6 search and having a run through with the ‘White dog’.
Jo had set an interesting test in that some of the hides were quite close together and in unusual places which is to be expected inL6 being the top class. However I was so pleased that all the L6 competitors took the challenges in their stride with everyone passing which is very unusual in these advanced levels. Ali Brannen, and her dog ‘Chase’, embraced the test and was the only L6 competitor to find all 12 hides becoming the well deserved winner.
So the day finally finished at 6pm and with the help of the L6 competitors with the clearing up everyone finally left around 6.30pm. Again a big thank you to Jo and Marianne for being so calm, relaxed, taking everything in their stride throughout this long day which ended with many happy competitors and a trials manager.
Level 2
Thank you so much to Heather Donnelly for asking me to help judge alongside Jo Hill. It was lovely to be able to join in.
I arrived at Finmere bright and early to help set up the exterior search ready for our first competitors. The day so far was very pleasant with no sign of the forecasted rain. We were so lucky all day as we did not get wet, even though we all came prepared with waterproofs.
The exterior search was ready and we got started promptly on time. A huge thank you to Lynn Bell who scribed for me. She did a sterling job.
Dave and Nikan were the first ones across the line and did a cracking 1st alert and then went on to find the second scent very confidently. A great start to the day.
Sue with Halle came next and sadly Halle was very distracted with the children and dogs playing just the other side of the fence. Halle only located one find but then went on to do a brilliant car search so redeemed herself.
So the searches went on with lots of enthusiasm from both dogs and handlers. It was lovely to watch so many talented dogs working away and enjoying themselves.
There was some lovely calm handling from Jennie with Mischief who went on to pass his level 3.
I was really impressed by the calm, methodical handling from just about everyone.
Katrina with Jumble had the fastest first alert in the exterior search – 2 seconds. Just amazing to watch.
Then we moved on to the level 2 and once again some really quiet calm handling and lovely searches from the dogs.
Next was the car search – although we did have a couple of false alerts most people trusted their dogs and called correctly. Once again lots of lovely calm handling.
I think today was all about calm, quiet, methodical handling which was a joy to watch.
Thank you to everyone who attended today, for being at the search area in time and having a great time with your dogs. It was then my privilege along with Jo Hill to present trophies, rosettes and certificates.
