Thankyou Stacey for inviting me along to Haynes to co judge a level 1 trial with my good friend and colleague Keith Clowes.
Following on to judge a level 5 trial in the afternoon.
A lovely day with slight cooling breeze.
A white dog was used prior to all searches commencing.
We had 10 teams in total and I took on the role of judging the tables/ chairs and vehicle searches.
Tables/Chairs
———————
This was set up in the centre of the main hall. The cloves scent was hidden underneath the furthest away chair to the left of the start line.
To easy for these well trained teams, all 10 were successfull,5 of those in under 17 seconds.
Worth of note here,Were Ruth and Fudge,Val and Pip,Jacky and Darcy, Frances and Holly,Bernice and Jazz and last but not least, armed with her trusty clicker,we’re Rebecca and Morse.
Vehicle
———-
This was set up,in the car park to the rear of the premises.I positioned the vehicle side on to the start, hiding the scent in the offside drivers wheel, furthest away from the start line.A nice gentle breeze was blowing towards the start cones.
6 of the 10 finding the scent with reasonable ease. The remaining 4 having a little problem with the wind, alerting on the scent blowing through the opposite wheel, and a couple being some 16-18” away from source.
Showing the way home here in some 26 seconds were Ruth and Fudge, closely followed by,Jacky and Darcy,Rebecca and Morse and Martina and Timba.
My congratulations go to the eventual Rosette winners on the day,as previously mention by My colleague,Keith.
A lovely way to spend a Sunday morning, watching these more than capable teams at this level.
The standard was very high,so congratulations to all the handlers and not forgetting your trainers to.
Following a short lunch break,I moved on to judge the level 5 trial.
Interior one
——————-
This search was set up in the 2 changing rooms, shower block and a small foyer area.
I decided to set 3 scents,2 cloves and 1 gun oil, allowing 3 minutes in total to find same.
I used one of the changing rooms to hide all three.
A cloves scent on the bottom of the entrance door ,and a cloves and gun oil scent on the end of the 2 benches.
6 of the teams were successful in finding all 3,with three finding 2 and the other 1.
Some lovely searching and handling on display.Worthy of note were,Carole and Barney,89 secs.Karen and Gunner,Gill and Drama,Katherine and Heston and Jackie and Jessie.
Exterior
————
This was set up at the rear of the building,on a grass area adjoining the public playing fields.
The area contained a vehicle,a large green metal box,3 commercial bottle banks and a brick wall some 20 meters in length, which included a door and piping.
5 hides were placed out here,3 cloves and 2 gun oil.5 of the teams giving an excellent display of systematic searching, and correctly identifying all hides.4 of the teams found 4 and 1 found 3.The grass caused a little distraction for some of dogs in this search area.
Carole and Barney leading the way home in 139 seconds. Also worthy of note here were,Jackie and Jessie,Sarah and Prince,Karen and Gunner, with a good systematic search and for perciverance,Katherine and Heston.
Interior 2
—————
This was set up,in part of the main hall, the bar area.It also incorporated a large commercial trolley which house a large number of folded up,chairs. The bar area itself was made up of walls, doors, tables and chairs.
4 scents were hidden here,2 cloves and 2 gun oil.4 minutes were allocated.
These were placed around the room on a stool,a table,a radiator and a book.
This search proved to be a little more testing for the teams, with only 4 finding Al,of the hides.
5 finding 3 and 1 finding 2.
A lovely display of searching shown here by Catherine and Cael.Nice searching to by Lena and Angel.
Needless to say,as can be seen from the results, once again giving a lovely display of searching and handling were……Katherine and Heston(calling the last find, bang on the allocated time).Phew….Showing the way home once again in just over half of the allocated time
were,Karen and Gunner.
I knew all of these teams from previous trials, but believe me,I never tire of watching them.
My congratulations go to the eventual rosette winners on the day……
1st… Karen and Gunner…..2nd…Katherine and Heston. (1st and 2nd on time).…3rd…Carole and Barney…4th…Jackie and Jessie.

Judges report by Keith Clowes.
Level 1 competition at Haynes on the 26 June 2022.
Stacey Robinson trial manager kindly asked Harry Latusek and myself to judge the level 1 trial.
For this trial I first judged the exterior. I chose to scent a water butt cover. There was some excellent handling from Valerie and Pip taking just 12.32 seconds, well done.
Next, I judged the boxes & luggage, the scent was placed on a box. There was again some nice handling. I would like to congratulate the following top four:
1st Ruth Payton with Fudge
2nd Martina Ramage with Timba
3rd Jacky Turner with Darcy
4th Rebecca Moore with Morse
I would also like to congratulate all the others that qualified and to thank all competitors for being such a fantastic bunch, with some really nice handling. Having spoken with the other judge Harry, we commented on how high the standard throughout the trial was. I would also like to thank all those who helped and in particular Katherine my scribe.
