First of all a big thankyou to Heather for inviting me to judge and Melanie Goble for scribing. I would also like to say how great it was to see the sun shining and not having to put up with torrential rain and strong winds.
Tables and chairs
7 of the 9 teams found both hides
Wall
I had decided to just use a wall for this exercise and 6 of the 9 teams found both hides. It was great to watch the dogs really focus on going to source on this one as i had put a hide on the edge of the doorstep which wasn’t easily accessible because of a plant pot. Most dogs passed the hide and then were aided by a slight breeze which enabled them to backtrack to source, BRILLIANT
Boxes and Luggage and Exterior
Not a lot to say really as all teams were successful in both areas.
The only negatives of the day were a couple of handlers not really trusting the dog and hesitating with the call. Watch those half raised waving arms folks you will get penalised.
The distraction odours were shampoo and vanilla, only a couple of dogs showed some interest and none were called.
congratulations to all competitors, all 9 qualified. The fist 2 places were separated by just 2 seconds.
Thank you to Heather for inviting me to judge Level 5. Thank you also to Rebecca Grant for scribing and Yaz Whitehall who also scribed and took control outside when we had loose dogs and footballs.
A white dog was used.
Interior 1
The scents were placed on a door lock (clove), on a mower box (gun oil), in the right hand corner of the hall (gun oil), on the side of a drawer on a low table (clove) and on a slide in the centre of the room (clove).
Exterior
The scents were placed in the corner of the wall (gun oil), a corner concrete and wood (clove), in a door frame (clove) and on a door hinge (gun oil). All competitors coped very well with the distractions of loose dogs, footballs and bikes.
Interior 2
The scents were placed under a pipe in the ladies toilet (clove), under the sink unit in the disabled toilets (clove), and in the seam of the mens toilet closed door (gun oil). This seemed to be the tricky find as it was an early find or competitors missed working that side completely.
As a judge l only see you work your dogs for a short time. I gave some feedback which l hope was helpful. I watched some lovely calm quiet handling throughout the searches.
Good luck for future trials.
