It seems that trials in Daglingworth are cursed when it comes to remembering bringing all items – last time we ran a trial, we forgot the rosettes, this time the milk – not sure which is more critical to a successful trial! Kate and Rick were running late as well, so we only started the Level 4 at 10:30 with a 30 minute delay… something that goes against the grain of my German soul.
I was scribing for Nigel and him and Rick split the inside/outside judging equally, so be both had our fair share of the cold. Berit organised the cakes and beverages for the competitors while the judging commenced at a near equal pace (albeit Nigel and myself always being just a bit ahead of Kate and Rick).
After 2.5 hours the trial was completed and we were able to have a short break before the Level 2 competitors arrived and Rick skilfully orchestrated the car parking and search vehicle placement. With only a 15 minute delay, we started the Level 2 trial and the day grew colder – with snow forecast for the evening. Again we split the outside judging fairly and were able to hand out rosettes at 4 pm.
The whole day was very enjoyable, with all competitors being very friendly and managing their nerves very well. Well done all those who qualified, it was great seeing the handler and dog teams rise to the challenges of, for Level 2, continuing searching after one find and for Level 4, working through distractions!

I arrived early to help the Trial Manager Tins Schuster to set up for the day. As well as myself Rick Burgess was coming along to be my co-judge so that we could get through the day hopefully quicker!
As we were preparing the coffee we realised that the milk was at home, so Tina quickly dashed off to get some as people were starting to arrive. Rick and Kate arrived around 9.30 so we had a quick chat about how the day was going to run.
As Level 4 was being taken first I was doing the Table and Chairs and the Exterior Search while Rick did the others. Kate scribed for Rick and Tina for myself.
We started about 30 minutes later than scheduled but the teams started well and we were soon making up time. There appeared to be competition between Christine Gregory with Dilly and Lesley Mack with Hetty as well as Yvette Preston and Anya. Coming into the last round it was very tight between the three and only seconds separating them. Christine and Dilly through proved to be worthy winners hotly followed by Lesley and Hetty, with third going to Yvette and Anya and 4th to Matt and Ellie. Unfortunately 1 team failed to qualify in this group.
After a quick break we commenced the Level 2 Trial with me doing the Vehicle Search and Boxes and Luggage. Again the standard was very high and they all went into the trial with a positive attitude. The dogs worked well although some handlers found it difficult to see when their dog alerted on the scent and then pulled them off, causing marks to be deducted. Amanda Murray and Thai worked wonderfully well as a team and were the winners, followed by Maria Daley and Flo who pushed the winners all the way. It was also good to see Shaun Kenvyn and Cassie qualify as this team have improved considerably as Cassie is a very nervous dog.
I would like to thank Tina who scribed for me and Kate Kemp with Rick Burgess who helped scribe and judge.
