Another fabulous trial at Thurleigh and once again not very good weather. Just very cold…
Judges Ali Brannen and Helen Soper arrived and I introduced them to all of the competitors.
We had the judges briefing, ran the white dog and then the searching began.
Jamie Read was doing the running in the morning but and he did a great job of ensuring all competitors arrived at their search area in time so that the judges were not kept waiting. This does add a lot of time to the day if the judges have to wait around. They work very hard as it is.
Ali started with the tables and chairs with only two dogs not finding the correct chair. Some very fast searches here with Laura and Jett finding it in only 9 seconds. Ali then moved outside for the vehicle search.
Helen Soper did her debut at Scentwork UK judging today and did a splendid job. She started with the exterior search and then moved indoors for the boxes and luggage. Kate Osborn was Helens scribe and did a wonderful job of keeping track of time and recording the results. There were also some very fast searches in the exterior with Nicki Hetfield-Rogerson and Merri finding it in only 11 seconds. Jennie Dean and Bear were only one second slower (if you can say slower) on 12 seconds.
Today there were a lot of very quick searches. It was lovely to see lots of people I knew but also we had five new competitors in level 1. So great to welcome new people to this fabulous world of Scentwork UK and be able to watch their progress up through the levels.
Once all searches were complete everyone came into the hall for the results and a warm up.
Most people qualified – and it was really lovely to see some new faces.
Huge thank you to Ali Brannen for judging and to her scribe Helen Kennedy who both worked very hard all day. Plus a huge thank you to Helen Soper who judged in the morning and then competed at level 5 in the afternoon. Also to Kate Osborn who scribed for Helen. Also massive thank you’s to Jamie Read who did the running in the morning and Nicky Hamlin who did the running in the afternoon. Nicky only came to work her dog in the morning at level 1 and then very kindly stayed all afternoon to help.
Hopefully I have thanked all my helpers – we really cannot put these trials on without you so your help is so very much appreciated.
Great result. Until next time – thank you all so much – for helping, competing and always being such lovely people.
Marianne

Ali Brannen
Level 1
First off thank you to Marianne Tembey for asking me to judge the level 1, along with my co judge Helen Soper, also big thanks to my scribe Helen Kennedy, and our runner Jamie Read. I was tasked with the tables & chair search and the vehicle search.
We started with the tables & chairs and the scent was hidden on chair 5 (left to right) underneath at the back of the seat. This proved pretty easy to most dogs with 11/13 teams finding the hide with no problems. Successful teams were Nicky Hamlin & Brodie, Chris Baldwin & Piglet, Nicki Hetfield-Rogerson & Merri, Chrissie McCrory & Paddy, Laura Burton & Jett, Kristin Palmer & Simba, Lena Stenton & Angel, Christine Davis & Indy, Jennie Dean & Bear and Pat Leggate & Keilin. There were some super-fast searches from the teams and some lovely handling.
Next was the vehicle search. The scent was placed in a rear wheel nut on the right side of the vehicle. Again 12/13 dogs were successful with some lovely searches and great handling around the vehicle. Successful teams were Kristin Palmer & Simba, Chris Baldwin & Piglet, Chrissie McCrory & Paddy, Nicki Hetfield-Rogerson & Merri, Pat Leggate & Keilin, Laura Burton & Jett, Christine Davis & Indy, Rosemary Steen & Harley, Nicky Hamlin & Bodie, Jennie Dean & Bear, Lynne Fletcher & Barney and Lena Stenton & Angel.
Renato Melo & Ruby sadly didn’t qualify, but they both worked hard throughout the searches and I have no doubt they will be successful in the future.
Conclusion
It was a great trial, with some great scores along with some super-fast searches made for an interesting morning, Well done to everyone who competed, you all worked really hard along with your dogs and I have no doubt you will all do well in future trials. I hope to see you all in the future.
A white Dog was run on all search areas.
Level 5
First off I would like to thank Marianne Tembey for asking me to judge at this trial, also huge thanks to my scribe Helen Kennedy who not only scribed but was my 2nd set of eyes. (Although she did nearly have a coronary when teams found hides in the last few seconds). Also to Nicky Hamlin who stayed on from the morning trial to be a runner for the level 5’s. Without these people giving up their free time these trials just wouldn’t be able to happen.
We started with the 1st interior search which was set up in the main hall. The great thing about Thurleigh Village Hall is that it is an older hall so there were plenty of nooks to hide scent in. In all 3 searches I only needed to secure one hide with tape, the rest of the hides were really easy to place and dogs weren’t able to remove them. They were all still surface hides, meaning an area of the swab was exposed to the dog’s noses, allowing them to get to source.
The hides were (left to right) Dado Rail, a gap in a skirting board, the bottom of a coat, gap in the fire door and the plastic feet of a ladder. The dado rail seemed to be the harder hide, it was placed to the right of a chair and although dogs were showing interest in the area they just kept bypassing this hide.3/13 teams found all 5 hides, these were Wendy Clay & Quincy who actually climbed the chair to get to source (very clever dog), Jeni Pirie & sully who just blasted through the searches, and Kate Osborn & Kiwi who again was super quick and very thorough. Excluding those who found all 5, 6 teams found 4 hides, and 3 teams found 3 hides, with just 1 team only finding 2.There was some lovely handling throughout this search with Dolores & Gypsy using the bracketing technique to cover the search area, Jamie’s Bear was a really enthusiastic searcher and was vocal in his excitement. The biggest lure to the teams was the clutter at the end of the room, a lot of teams spent a long time searching this area (I would have been drawn to this also), when actually there were no hides there. Then it was on to the exterior search.
There were 4 hides, these were a band around a plant pot, a crack in the bottom of a wall, a gap by a step and between 2 paving slabs. 8/13 teams found all 4 hides, these were Helen Soper & Trek, Jeni Pirie & Sully, Chris Clements & Cueva Diva, Kate Osborn & Kiwi, Janet Wykes & Jess, Dolores Palmer & Gypsy, Jayde Smith & Chase and Denise Pile & Butty. The hardest find seemed to be the crack in the wall, although the scent was exposed dogs just weren’t getting their noses down. 2 teams found 3 hides, with 3 teams only finding 2. Again there was some lovely searching Denise’s Butty worked really hard on the exterior, as did Helen’s Trek, Chris’s Queeva Diva and Jaydes’ Chase. Then it was to the last interior search.
This search area was a straight corridor with several doors and just a heater. The 3 scents were hidden in the 1st door, 3rd door and the 5th door. A whopping 12/13 teams found all 3 hides. These were Wendy & Quincy, Kate & Kiwi, Julie & Betty, Jeni Pirie & Sully, Janet Wykes & Jess, Jamie & Bear, Helen & Trek, Dolores & Gypsy, Denise & Butty, Chris & Queeva Diva and Annette Leslie & Disney. Again some really impressive team work, Janet Wykes just sent Jess down the corridor and was able to tell her dog to work on without physically moving herself – wow. Julie Thomas & Betty made a lovely quick job of this area too despite a food malfunction in the first search. Annette’s Disney didn’t make things easy for her but had no trouble finding all 3 hides in this area and Claire Bennett’s Benson was successful here but had made Claire work so hard all afternoon, well done for staying calm Claire.
In conclusion the trial was a success with 12/13 teams qualifying with some very high scores. All teams worked hard throughout the afternoon and this was shown by the amount of qualifiers. Well done everyone and hope to see you all in the future.
A white dog was ran on all search areas.
