This was my first trial as a trial manager. I was apprehensive as really didn’t know how it would go! But armed with my lists, a van load of “stuff” and a heap of excitement I set off to face the day. Well the weather was kind, which helped set the day off to a good start. The trial went smoothly, with all bar one team qualifying, and no teams disgraced themselves.

Thanks go to Paul Quinlan, the judge and Jo Brooks, owner of Positively Canine for allowing us to use her fabulous venue.

There were some excellent searches but also a fair amount of nerves coming into play from the handlers, resulting in handling errors and false alerts.

The scores on the doors really do not reflect how far some of these teams have come on over the past few months.

All I can say is, here’s to the next one!

Many thanks to Tina Walker (scentwork uk hits York) for organising the trial

The trial was a first for both myself judging and Tina being trials manager for scentwork uk.

Tinas’ pre trial organisation of the event ensured everything ran smoothly and thus made my job as judge much easier.

I would like to thank all the competitors for their positive attitudes to the job in hand. The minor errors made by them were in the main due to nerves causing one or two incorrect declarations by the handlers. All the dogs demonstrated their ability to search and identify the scent.

As this was a level one trial the indication/freeze was satisfactory but I believe making the indication stronger with a longer freeze will help with the scent source indication,

A special mention should go to the team of Jenny Dyer and Jethro who not only came in first place bu showed the most improvement from their first taster day. Jethro gives a strong positive indication with a good freeze which Jenny can immediately identify.
