Trial Manager and Judges Reports

Scentwork UK Level 6 Judges Report
16th January 2020 – Bodymoor Heath

First off I would like to say thank you to Ellen Ward Lindley for asking me to judge this trial and for scribing for the day.
We started with the Exterior search first as the weather was due to turn foul later on. The exterior was set up down the side of the hall and 4 hides were placed. The 1st hide was at the bottom of the wall to the right of a bench and this was truffle, next was the corner of a metal black box and that was also truffle, a drain pipe for the 3rd which was cloves and lastly a bracket of a door which was cloves. 2/7 teams found all 4 hides and they were Harry & Zack & Justine & Chumley. 3/7 teams found 3 hides and they were Karen & Barley, Kathy & Portia and Peter & Dolly. Unfortunately Dolly wasn’t feeling well so Peter withdrew at this point, hope she feels better soon. 2/7 teams found 2 hides and they were Diane & Megan & Helen & Chip.
Then it was on to Interior 1 which was held in the main hall. The 4 hides from left to right were a plug socket which held truffle, a bag of brand new tennis balls which was also truffle, the bottom of a table leg which was gun oil, and lastly the bottom of a hanging coat which was cloves. For whatever reason some of the teams struggled in this search. 2/6 found 3 scents and they were Karen & Barley and Harry & Zack. 3/6 teams found 1 and they were Kathy & Portia, Justine & Chumley and Helen & Chip. Only 1 team didn’t find any hides in this search. The 2 most missed hides were the bottom of the table leg with only Harry & Zack finding this 1, and the bottom of the hanging coat which only Karen & Barley found.
Lastly it was Interior 2 this was held in the hall and included the disabled toilet. The 4 hides were bottom of a cabinet – truffle, a weight – gun oil, bottom of a door – truffle and the bottom of a shelf – cloves. 2/6 teams found 4 hides and they were Harry & Zack and Karen & Barley, 3/6 found 2 and they were Kathy & Portia, Justine & Chumley & Helen & Chip, 1 team found 1 hide and that was Diane & Megan. The 2 most missed hides were the cabinet at the beginning of the search and the weight with only 3 teams finding these and they were Helen & Chip, Karen & Barley and Harry & Zack.
Only 2 teams qualified for this level and they were 1st Place Harry & Zack and 2nd Place to Karen & Barley. Congratulations to you both, you covered the search areas well and trusted in your dogs to tell you where the hides were which is what Scentwork is all about. Thanks also to Justine for staying on till the end so she could congratulate the qualifiers which is a sign of wonderful sportsmanship.
Thank you to everyone who took part, I hope you all took something positive away from this trial even if it was just a search your dog did well or something to add to your training in the future. You all took the best dog’s home at the end of the day.
I hope to see you all in the future.
Ali Brannen

All hides were as per Scentwork UK guidelines with an area of the scent exposed to the dog’s nose and a white dog was used on all areas.

Firstly a huge thank you to Ali Brannen for agreeing to judge this trial. I took on the role of scribe as well as TM and it was a huge pleasure to be able to watch the competitors work their dogs, though it’s always a shame to not be able to chat to competitors between their searches.

It’s been a wet few months, and despite the day before being nice and dry, trial day was predicted to be stormy and horrible! On the upside we weren’t expecting rain until around 1pm, so Ali sensibly chose to do the external search first, followed by the two interior searches.

There’s very little left for me to say other than a huge thank you to Karen Denton and Ali for helping to tidy up at the end, and also to all the competitors for not finishing off the second box of Jaffa Cakes!

Happy sniffing all. I look forward to meeting you at a trial soon.
Ellen
