Target Odours Unveiled.
The Essential Scents of Scentwork UK!

Preparing for Scentwork UK Trials -
Your Guide to Target Odours

To participate in Scentwork UK trials, dogs are trained to identify specific “target odours.” Let’s break down what these odours are and how to prepare them.

What are the Target Odours?
1. Cloves (You can use any supermarket brand of “Clove Whole”)
2. Gun Oil (Specifically, Napiers VP90 Gun Oil 125ml bottle)
3. Truffle Oil (We recommend “English Truffle Oil” by Truffle Hunter)

Odour Carriers:
For Levels 1-4 (Tier 1), use 2cm x 2cm sections of black polycotton or polyamide swabs. Old socks or pop socks are perfect for this!
For Levels 5-6, use approximately 2cm x 2cm sections of cotton, fleece and/or Velcro. Old socks or pop socks are perfect for this!

For Levels 7-10, use approximately 1cm x 1cm of any type material which has been shown to be absorbent to the scent. This may include tooth picks, elastic bands, cotton buds.. Time to get creative!!

Odour Preparation:

Clove

  1. To prepare Clove scented articles, place 8/10 dried cloves in a clean, empty airtight jar.
  2. Place articles, in size or cut into ‘bands’ (eg the elastic top of a sock) on top of the dried cloves and leave at least 2 days prior to the competition.
  3. Shake the jar occasionally to ensure even thorough scenting of the articles.

Note that articles should not fill any jar by more than 1/4 full thus allowing complete and thorough scenting of articles within, by turning and/or shaking occasionally.

  • The scented articles will be ready for use after 7 days and for up to 4 weeks.
  • Prepare at least 7 days prior to the competition.

Gun Oil

    1. The Gun oil should be prepared in the following way. The gun oil recommended for use is ‘Napier gun oil’. Ensure you purchase the gun oil lubricant rather than the gun oil cleaners and sprays.
    2. Place 8/10 droplets of the ‘gun oil’ on to the top of a round cotton wool pad then place into a clean jar, oil facing up on top of articles. Alternatively suspend cotton pad above the scented articles in a shell such as a tea infuser or muslin drawstring small bag.
    3. Take care NOT to get gun oil on to individual articles as this can lead to contamination of search areas. Oil is difficult to remove once it has been in contact with surfaces/other items. To ensure even, thorough scenting of the articles turn/shake the jar occasionally.

PLEASE REMOVE COTTON WOOL PAD AND REPLACE LID SECURELY BACK ON TO JAR BEFORE TURNING/SHAKING

    1. Use gloves or tweezers when removing cotton wool pad and place pad, gun oil side up on a clean tissue or another cotton wool pad. After shaking, replace cotton wool pad into jar and secure the lid. Note also that articles should not fill any jar by more than 1/4.
    2. The scented articles will be ready for use after 7 days and for up to 4 weeks.
    3. Prepare at least 7 days prior to the competition.

Differentiating Scents: Dogs can separate odours with their advanced olfactory discrimination. This means that even if a narcotic is masked with a potent perfume or concealed amongst aromatic spices, a trained detection dog can still identify the drug's distinct smell.
